Cabatuan Cemetery for the second time around
Posted by on November 26, 2009
My recent trip to Iloilo has been so quick and crazy. quick because I only stayed in the city for only seven hours and crazy because we explored some of the province’s gems that many people have not dared to go to.
The last destination that I have visited during my brief stay is the Cemetery of Cabatuan, Iloilo.
Its cemetery has always been very beautiful. The octagonal mortuary chapel is the highlight of this cemetery. The walls of its chapel are decorated with Classical and Romanesque motifs.
The hexagonal shaped tiles are still intact and has never been replaced. Its original dome-shaped roof has already been torn down and has been replaced with a flat cement roof.
When we went there last November 4, a bamboo frame is still on the chapels front. An improvised tent or trapal must have been installed on its front during the All Souls Day and it has not yet been removed.
Iloilo truly is rich in heritage. These structures tell stories of its past. I just hope that these age old cemeteries and churches would be preserved so that the future generation can still appreciate the beauty of the past.
