Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival 2010 presents SINAMBA Mardi Gras Contest
Posted by on January 5, 2010
The Philippines’ oldest sailboat racing competition, known as the Iloilo Paraw Regatta will be staging the SINAMBA Mardi Gras Competition.
Sinamba is a combination of two Ilonggo words “Sinaut” meaning dancing and “Inamba” meaning singing. Thus, SINAMBA literally means, singing and dancing. And dancing to the samba beat, that is.
I am not sure when the organizers renamed this side event as Sinamba. I remember it was previously called Samba de Regatta.
My first time to see a Sinamba Festival performance was during the Aliwan fiesta 2009 where the group joined as a guest performer.
Last December 4, Sinamba Festival also performed in Roxas City during the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly.
This year’s Sinamba Mardi Gras Competition will be held on February 18, 2010 7PM at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand and on February 21 at the Villa Beach during the final day of the Paraw Regatta Festival 2010
This year’s Paraw Regatta theme is “Honoring a Proud Seafaring Tradition”
The Paraw Regatta has been adjudged as the country’s Best Sports Tourism Event for 2009. The award was given by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP)
