Dumaguete Church and Belfry
Posted by on March 4, 2010
While we were Dumaguete City Philippines recently, Marc and I visited the Dumaguete Church and Belfry.
The church in Dumaguete is dedicated to its patroness, St. Catherine of Alexandria or locally known as Santa Catalina. The church was elevated to the status of Cathedral and is the seat of the Diocese of Dumaguete.
The church was built in 1811 and beside it is its belfry. The belfry was constructed using coral stones between 1774-1776. In 1987, the belfry was restored and a grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes was built at the base of the belfry.
And due to its proximity to the city plaza and the public market, a lot of people pass by this area especially during peak hours. The Dumaguete Cathedral and Belfry is located right in front of the Dumaguete Plaza. It can be reached via tricycle. Fareis PHP7 per passenger.

Dumaguete is one of the nicest places in the Philippines. I have been there 2 years ago and I wish to visit again especially their churches.
