CNN GO Listed San Joaquin Iloilo as one of Asia’s most overlooked destination!

In an article last week, CNN Go has listed25 of Asia’s most overlooked destinations. These are just some of the exciting destinations that are normally not part of the tourist guide books or maps, but totally worth visiting.
And I am more than elated to see that one Philippine destination was included on the list! San Joaquin, the southern most town of Iloilo is lucky to be in this elite list of 25!
So one would ask, why San Joaquin was included? The reason i plain and simple: It’s church facade is something extraordinary you wont see this kind of design in any other part of the globe.
Instead of saints and trumpeting angels, or images of Jesus and Mary, the church of San Joaquin Iloilo depicts the Battle of Tetuan. This is the only church that has a militaristic theme on its facade, where war scene from the Battle of Tetuan is depicted.
Stories has it that when the church was still being constructed, the news of Spain’s victory over Morocco at the Battle of Tetuan reached th shores of Iloilo. The priest, who was so elated of the good news, asked the church builders to depict the scenes of the battle on the church’s facade.
The church of San Joaquin has been declared as a National Historical Treasure. I am just so proud to say that I hve been to this beautiful church thrice.
