El Ideal Bakery and Refreshment in Silay City
Posted by on May 20, 2010
Silay City in Negros Occidental ha always been known for its old houses. It is in this place where sugar barons once lived. And as the clock turns its hands, one business has survived the challenges of time, and has become an institution in this side of the Philippines: El Ideal Bakery and Refreshments.
El Ideal was established in the 1920′s by Mr. Cesar Locsin y Lacson. Today, bakery is handled by the 4th generation family members.
A lot of local favorite pastries are available in el Idea, but I guess the best seller among them all is the Guaple Pie and the famed Silay Lumpia.
The Guaple pie is I guess one of a kind. I have yet to see a cafe or bakery that seels guaple pie. The filling of the pie is made of Guava variety known as Guaple. This guava variety are large in size and normally turns reddish when ripe.
The Silay Lumpia on the other hand is also unique. I have seen a lot of fresh lumpia, especially in Metro Manila, and most of the time, it is topped with chopped peanuts and poured with peanut sauce. The Silay Variety is much smaller in size, and is wrapped in wax paper, and eaten as it is. No sauce is needed before eating, as the lumpia itself is already bursting with all the flavors of ubod (palm heart) chopped garlic, shrimp bits, chopped chicharon, and some more secret ingredients. Another big difference between the Manila Fresh Lumpia and the Silay variety is that the lumpia in Silay is wrapped in very thin wrapper, probably similar to the lumpia wrapper used in pritong lumpia. While the Manila version is wrapped using very thick yellowish wrapper.
El Ideal is located right beside the National Highway, and is walking distance away from the heritage houses of Silay. You should never miss this bakery when visiting Bacolod City!
