Magyar Hungarian Restaurant, Paseo de Magallanes

Posted by on June 22, 2010

I must admit, I am not really familiar with the Hungarian foods, probably except for the Hungarian sausage and Goulash. So when I was recently invited to dine at Magyar Restaurant in Paseo de Magallanes, I immediately said YES.

The word Magyar is Hungarian term for several things: the country, its people, and its language.

Magyar Restaurant, is currently the only Hungarian restaurant in Metro Manila. One of the things i immediately noticed is their menu. their menu was hand crafted, scrapbook-style. And each menu book was made by each restaurant staff, thus, no two menu books are the same! Aside from the food listings, their personally made menu book also contains some trivia about the Hungarian foods, the Magyar people and a little bit of this and that. Lovely, isn’t it?

What is pretty obvious in Hungarian dishes is that most of them are prepared with paprika. Paprika is a very important spice in Hungarian dishes.

For starters, we were served with a variety of breads. I love the cumin roll. Kakaiba ang lasa. I love it with salted butter.

We were then served with Langos, its a pancake made with potatoes with garlic , sour cream and cheese. The flavor is really good. I just find it a bit heavy on the tummy, though.

After the Langos, we were then served with two types of Goulash, the beef goulash and Szekely Goulash (pork and sauerkraut). Between the two, I prefer the beef goulash. It actually looks like beef caldereta, but tastes different.

We then had Stuffed Chicken. It’s a boneless chicken filled with chestnuts, served with sauerkraut and roasted potatoes. What came in next is the Chicken Paprika and Lamb Paprika served with Spätzle. Spätzle is a type of pasta, common in Hungary. I only ate the chicken because I do not want to feel very full that night. Between the two, I prefer the Lamb Paprika. It’s tender and is just oozing with flavor.

After our main course comes the dessert: Gundel Crepe. Its a traditional Hungarian dessert filled with chocolates and nuts.

It was a really great dining experience. It has somehow gave me an idea of the Hungarian Culture through its flavorful foods. Magyar Restaunt is a must try for the foodies!

  5. Enrico Dee says:

    Hi Dyanie,

The spiciness of paprika is very very mild. I am not really fond of spicy foods, but the level of spiciness of Magyar’s foods is bearable for me. if you want more zing, you can always ask the server to add more spice, and there also the salt, pepper and paprika shaker on the table :D
