Tumauini Church

The beautiful Tumauini Church has been in my bucket list for quite some time now. I am always amazed at the beauty of this church since I first discovered it through the Department of Tourism ad campaigns before.

The Church of San Matias in Tumauini, Isabela Philippines is known as one of the most beautiful brick churches in the Philippines.

The facade of the church has so many ornamented bricks which gives life to this massive structure. I love the bricks of this church. It’s amazing how it was shaped to form designs.

The altar of the tumauini Church is still intact, and just like its facade, it is also made of red bricks. If I am not mistaken, this is the only church I have seen that uses red bricks as construction material for the whole altar.

On the church’s side is a cylindrical belltower painted in white. At first look the belfry looks like a wedding cake with decorations all over it. There are designs that look like laces, and hearts.

The church is surrounded by brick fences with elaborate decor too.

When Marc and I went to Tumauini Church last month, there was an ongoing wedding ceremony held, which forced us to stay, and wait until the wedding is over before we can even start shooting. Good thing the weather is so fine. We got blue skies with some patches of clouds here and there. The weather is really perfect when we arrived in Tumauini, which is around 50 minutes by van from Tuguegarao City.

This photo was taken last October 4, 2010. Exactly a month ago. This was before the super Typhoon Megi hit the whole Cagayan Valley Region. I wonder how this church looks today. I have seen some video footages in TV News that the roof of the Tumauini Church was removed, some stained glass were broken and trees in front of the church yard uprooted. I just hope that the damage is not severe so that restoration will be a bit easier.
