Exploring the Flying Buttresses of the Iguig Church
Posted by on December 3, 2010
During my recent trip to the Cagayan Region, one of the places that I included in my must-visit places is the Iguig Church. The church is dedicated to its patron, Saint James.
The Iguig Church was built between the years 1765 to 1787 and just like the other churches in the Cagayan Valley Region, this church was also built using red bricks baked in brick ovens in Tuguegarao.
While the facade has alreay been renovated, its interior and back remains intact. If I am not mistaken this is the only chuch that has flying buttresses on its back for support. Many baroque church has solid buttresses on its side and back but the ones in Iguig is totally dfferent.
Another thing that should not be missed while in the church yard is the Calvary Hills that features 14 life sized sculptures of Stations of the Cross.
When I was at the Iguig Church last October,it was almost 4 in the afternoon, so the lighting was just perfect with a few clouds here and there. Expect to climb the hill to get to the church. I am not sure though if you can hire a tricycle that can bring you up to the church yard.
I love the Iguig Church! I actually love the buttresses more than its facade. I hope that this church will be maintained by the locals so that the next generations could still appreciate its beauty. I really wanted to go back to the places we visited during our Cagayan Valley trip. I hope I can still get some Late Deals from airlines and book hotel room. If not, then hopefully, I could squeeze this in to my travel Calendar next year.

As usual, gorgeous photos! Thanks for posting, will definitely visit this church next time I venture to Cagayan. I wish everyone else cared a little more about preserving places like this.
