Here are some more photos from the recently concluded Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo City, Philippines. Dinagyang Festival is an annual event held every fourth Sunday of January in honor of the Infant Jesus more popularly known as Sto. Nino.
There are several events ined up during the weeklong festivities which would climax on the fourth Sunady of January. During this day, various tribes representing different baangays and schools all over Iloilo City would paint themselves in dark brown, imitating the color of the Panay Ati. They would then dress up in elaborate costumes and headdress and dance to the hypnotic beating of the drums up until past noon. The tribes would dance around the 3kilometer parade route as a thanksgiving to the Santo Nino.
This year we saw fourteen tribes competed for the Ati Ati contest. Tribu Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro national High School Emerged as this year’s grand champion, earning them the right to represent the Dinagyang Festival in aliwan Fiesta 2011 in Metro Manila. They will be defending the crown won by Tribu Paghidaet last year, which, unfortunately, emerged only as 1st runner up in this year’s Dinagyang contest.
Tribu Bola bola of Iloilo National High School won the second runner up trophy. Earlier the school’s administrator has mad pronouncements through the media that this is going to be the tribe’s last hurrah.
