Dinagyang Festival 2012 Schedule

Iloilo City’s Pride, the Dinagyang Festival 2012 will once again be held this coming January! Dinagyang Festival was once declared as a Hall of Famer by the Association of tourism Officers of the Philippines as the Best Tourism Event in the Philippines.
Dinagyang is an annual religious and cultural event mainly centered on the devotion to the Child Jesus or the Santo Nino. Every year, men and women would paint themselves in dark brown immitating the dark skin color of the natives or the Ati. They would then go out in the streets to dance to the hypnotic beating of the drums.
Every year the street dancing competition gets fiercer as winners are usually given the right to represent the city in various events. Just recently the Dinagyang Festival won the Grand Championship title of the Aliwan Fiesta in Manila, with a prize money of 1 Million Pesos.
Last June the defending champion flew to New York and Washington DC USA to perform during the Philippine Independence Day celebration.
The Dinagyang Festival has three main events. The Fluvial Procession which starts from the San Jose Church then the image is brought to the Iloilo River and back to the church again.
Then there’s the Kasadyahan Festival, where towns from all over Iloilo portrays their local culture, beliefs and the uniqueness of their town through streetdancing competition.
and the main highlight of festivities is the Dinagyang Ati competition where we get to see dancers painted in dark colors wearing elaborate costume dance to very intricate and fast moving choreography.
Dinagyang Festival is always held every 4th Sunday of January. Below is the Official schedule of Activities:

the 2012 edition of Dinagyang Festival will have a new route! This year, the festival will start at the Iloilo Sports complex. This is done in order to accommodate more tourists who would want to see the competition.
