Plaza Cuartel is now a public park located just beside the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral. The place has witnesssed the darkest story of Palawan’s past. Yes, if only these park could talk it could’ve already shared the grim tragedy the soldiers went through.
Plaza Cuartel used to be a Japanese garrison where American Prisoners of War were incarcerated. It was World War II. The world was as its darkest moments when suddenly the Japanese forces burned 143 American soldiers in the garrison’s underground. The world will never forget December 14 1944. Te day the Plaza Cuartel was put on fire.
But eleven American soldiers were very lucky to have survived this harrowing ordeal. They swam the waters off Plaza Cuartel to Iwahig.
A memorial was erected inside the Plaza Cuartel grounds in memory of all those who died under the Japanese Forces. A sculpture was also made by an American war Veteran Don Schloat portray the horrors of this grim event.
