Pintaflores Festival 2011

Every November 5th, The City of San Carlos in the Northeastern part of Negros Occidental comes into full bloom as the city celebrates the annual Pintaflores Festival 2011.

The festival is held every November 5th on the feast day of San Carlos Borromeo, the City’s Patron Saint.

The festival dances retells the legend of Princess Nabingka who sailed from the nearby island of Cebu together with her warriors. Upon arrival they named the place Nabingkalan in honor of Princess Nabingka. But due to loneliness, and being away from her family, Princess Nabingka became sick. She got so weak and her illness became incurable.

The tribespeople seek the aid of a babaylan or a folk healer. The healer then ordered the people to plant flowers trees and shrubs, as its absence was the main cause of the Princess’ failing health.

But due to the harsh climate in the area, flowers wouldn’t bloom. So the babaylan ordered the tribes people. men and women to have their skin tattooed with flowers. The people followed the orders of the babaylan. they had their skins tattoed with flowers that are endemic to her origin so that it would remind her of her glorious past before sho sailed to Nabingkalan.

The news on the Princess’ failing health reached to her family’s land. Her father, a local chieftain, sailed to Nabingkalan together with a priest who brought with him an image of San Carlos Borromeo.
Upon arrival in her daughter’s land, he cannot believe what he finally saw. His daughter was well and completely healed. The chieftain then threw a thanksgiving party for his daughters recovery.
