PHOTOWALK: Silay City
Posted by on November 25, 2011
Last week, I had the chance to go back to Silay Cityto have a merienda and take a leisurely stroll. I arrived in Silay around 3PM so I went straight to El Ideal. I ordered Lumpia, Guapple Pie and Bicho bicho. I

I miss the classic Ilonggo bicho Bicho. It is very different from the bicho bicho being sold at the stalls in Manila. The ones in Negros uses ground sticky rice smothered with melted sugar and sesame seeds. Yummy.
Silay has always been known for its delectable kakanin especially lumpia, and El Ideal is also known for its best seller guapple pie. It is a dessert made using guapple, a variety of guava found in Negros.

After the heavy snacks, I started to walk starting from Rizal corner J Pitong Ledesma Street. Among the notable houses found along the Pitong Ledesma street are those of former Senator Jose Locsin and National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin.
From J. Pitong Ledesma, I took a right turn at the Cinco de Noviembre street, which is known for the Balay Negrense and the Hofilena House.
Word from locals say that the huse pictured above sells the best Lumpia in Silay. There are no signages whatsoever. All you have to do is just knock at the gate and inform the staff that you will buy lumpia. It is the word of mouth the made this secret spread among the locals.
Watch our for the second part of this series!
