Maridel’s Cafe: Iloilo’s Sweet Surprise

Posted by on March 6, 2012

I have been dreaming of one day, giving Maridel’s in Plazuela de Iloilo a visit. Last October 31, I had a plan of going to this new dessert shop in Iloilo but my attempt was a fail since the store was closed that day for a private function.

So I marked my Calendar. March 1, 2012. Just after I dropped my bag in my Hotel room, I immediately went to Maridel’s with Jorry of Flavours of Iloilo Jorry is undoubtedly the best guide when it comes to gastronomic tours in Iloilo. He won the Philippine Blog Awards – Visayas Best Food Blog for 2010 and 2011.

So off we went to Plazuela de Iloilo. I am so excited. Finally I get to invade Maridel’s. the summer heat is just so unbearable. Thank God the quaint cafe and dessert house has a really good air conditioning unit :)

I must admit. I got overwhelmed upon seeing these rows of sweet surprises. I dunno where to start, what to order. So just to be safe, I asked for Jorry’s and the staff’s recommendations.

So we eneded up ordering four assorted cakes to sample. We had Heaven & Hell which is a layer of peanut butter, chocolate, and cream. Chocolate Blackout, Chocolate cake, frosting, and ganache. Everything chocolate. We also had Banoffee and Frozen Lemon Merengue.

Heaven and Hell

Among the four cakes we got to sample, I instantly fell in love with the Banoffee. I can easy savor the mild sweetness of the sliced bananas and the caramel. Yummy!

Another favorite of mine is the heaven and hell. I ust love the chocolate and peanut butter combination! Winner!

Although Jorry and the cafe staff agreed that the bestseller is the Frozen Lemon Merengue, I find it a little bit to sour for my taste buds. Sorry, but I am not really a big fan of sour foods. And lemon is also on that list.

Also it is a little bit tangy for me, I still gave it a try and I find the merengue part very yummy and fluffy.

Maridel’s is owned by Maridel Uygongco, who according to Jorry bakes the cakes herself. Maridel’s will definitely satisy all your sweet cravings. Probably one of the sweetest houses in Iloilo!

The cafe is located at the Ground Floor of Plazuela de Iloilo. That’s the new establishment located beside SM City Iloilo (Mandurriao).

Go, and give in to your sweet cravings…Ahhh wait, did I just said, that I will be back here next week? :)
