Every month of August, Davao City holds the annual celebration of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival 2013.
The name Kadayawan came from the traditional Dabawenyo greeting “Madayaw” The festival is a celebration of life, and thanksgiving for the bountiful harvest.
It is during this time when Durian, the tropical fruit closely associated to the city of Davao is on its peak season.
It is also during this time when the ten tribes of Davao come to the city to celebrate. The people of Ata, Matigsalug, Ovu-Manuvo, Klata-Djangan, Tagabawa, Tausog, Maguindanao, Maranao, Kagan, and Sama ethnic groups wear their most colorful attire and parade in the streets of Davao.
During the festival season, various events are lined up for the people to enjoy and participate. There are garden shows, sports competitions, cooking competitions, concerts and a lot more. But the three events that you should not miss during the Kadayawam sa Davao 2013 are the street dancing competition, the float parade, and the hiyas sa Kadayawan.
Hiyas sa Kadayawan is not your typical. Beauty Pageant. Yup, it is still a beauty pageant, but what sets it apart is that its contestants are representatives of the various ethnic groups of Davao. This is one event that I am very interested to watch. Hopefully this year…
The street dancing also known as the Indak Indak sa Kadalanan showcases the best of Davao and Mindanao culture. I think Indak Indak is one of the biggest streetdancing events in Mindanao.
Various elementary and High Schools from all over Davao city, plus several contingents coming for the other parts of Mindanao join the annual street dancing competition. Making it as one of the much awaited event in kadayawan.
Another must-see event during the Kadayawan Festival is the Float parade also known as the Pamulak Kadayawan.
Several superbly designed floats all covered in flowers, as well as fruits parade along the major thoroughfares of Davao as part of the celebration. It is also during this time when celebrities coming from Metro Manila would join the festivities by riding in the floats sponsored by TV Networks.
This year, the official Kadayawan sa Davao 2013 schedule has not yet been released. But based on the past celebrations. This is how the schedule for this years festival would look like:
August 17 – Indak Indak sa Kadalanan
August 18 – Pamulak kadayawan
other events including the Hiyas sa Kadayawan will be added once the official schedule is out.
