Disrespecting our past
Posted on March 29, 2007

This marker rests at the foot of the Tobacco Monopoly Monument in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
The Tobacco Monopoly Monument is a significant reminder to Ilocanos as well as to other Filipinos, that once in our history, the Ilocano people were forced to plant nothing, but tobacco. The monument was built as a sign of gratitude to the Crown of Spain for lifting the tobacco monopoly.
But it seems that present generation no longer appreciates what our forefathers have done. The marker shown above was obviously defaced. And this marker was installed way before Philippines gained independence.
I just hope and pray that we as Filipinos should learn how to appreciate how past. The Tobacco Monopoly Monument is just one of the tangible treasures that we should preserve so that our grand children, and the future generation should learn what our fore fathers did during the Spanish Era.

I can’t even make out what the vandal wrote. It’s a shame, though.
Hopefully we can educate our children better regarding heritage better by not just memorizing dates and establishments in history textbooks but internalizing and applying the past to the present and what it can do for the future.
As what Kung Fu Tzu said: “One must study the past, in order to define the future”.
