Basilica Minore del Cristo Nazareno
Posted on July 20, 2007
When we say Quiapo, what usually comes into our mind is the Church of the Black Nazarene. The Basilica Minore del Cristo Nazareno houses the dark-skinned Christ carrying the cross.
The novena for the Holy image of the Suffering Christ is held every Friday. And during this day, thousands of devotees flock to the Basilica to pay homage. You’ll get to see here devotees coming from the various social strata. Young and old. Men and women. rich and poor. All come to this place to hear mass. Expect a heavy flow of traffic around the area. Outside the churchyard are old women selling candles you can light at the altar.
A few more steps away from the church you’ll get to see the irony of ironies: women doing fortune telling, some selling concoctions made from tree barks and label them as pamparegla (to induce menstruation). Some sells amulets and charms which according to them is good for business, personal protection, or for love life.
